Squatters’ Front Stages Protest Against Eviction Without Proper Resettlement

Dragon Media News Desk

The Joint National Squatters’ Front staged a protest at Maitighar in Kathmandu, accusing the authorities of evicting squatters without making proper alternative arrangements.

Members of squatter and landless communities affiliated with the front demonstrated demanding guaranteed access to safe housing, immediate resettlement of displaced families and an end to the use of force during settlement-clearance operations.

The protesters became further agitated after floodwaters entered the holding centre in Kirtipur on Saturday morning, forcing families staying there to leave. Their anger intensified after a Gen-Z activist was arrested later in the evening.

The demonstrators criticised what they described as the government’s repeated practice of removing squatters and landless families or placing them in temporary shelters instead of finding a lasting solution to their problems.

They called on the government to guarantee the right to housing and introduce a long-term, humane and dignified resettlement plan.
