Former education minister and senior Rastriya Prajatantra Party leader Fateh Singh Tharu passed away on Thursday. With his death, Banke has lost an experienced political leader, former lawmaker and prominent education campaigner.
Active in politics from the Panchayat era through the multiparty democratic period, Tharu held several government responsibilities, including at the Ministry of Education and Culture. He was elected to the Rastriya Panchayat from Banke in 1986 and later won a seat in the House of Representatives from Banke Constituency No. 3 as an RPP candidate in 1994.
Tharu began his political career at the local level. He served as a village panchayat chief, a member of the Banke District Panchayat and later its chair before establishing himself in national politics.
Alongside his political career, he made an important contribution to the educational development of Banke. He played an active role in establishing schools in rural areas, arranging land and other resources for educational institutions, facilitating teacher management and supporting the upgrading of schools.
He is particularly remembered for his contribution to expanding access to education and strengthening local institutions in Banke Constituency No. 3, where many regarded him not only as a political leader but also as a social and educational guardian.
Political leaders, party workers, education-sector representatives and well-wishers have expressed grief over his death and paid tribute to him.
