Terrorist Groups Increasingly Using Video Games to Recruit Youth: UN Official

Terrorist groups have begun actively using video games to recruit young people, according to Alexander Zuev, Acting Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations for Counter-Terrorism.

In an interview with the Russian news agency TASS, Zuev said terrorist organizations targeting young people were increasingly incorporating electronic games into their recruitment strategies.

He said the global terrorist threat continued to evolve and that no region was completely protected from it. According to Zuev, West Africa, the Sahel and West Asia remain among the principal priorities of the United Nations’ counter-terrorism efforts.

His remarks indicate that the widespread popularity of video games among young people is creating additional challenges for digital oversight and youth protection as terrorist groups seek to exploit such platforms for recruitment.
