Police Intervene in ‘Chalo Parliament’ March, Security Tightened in Delhi

Security was tightened around India’s Parliament House after a “Chalo Parliament” march organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) reached the vicinity of the parliamentary complex in New Delhi.

The march, which began at Jantar Mantar on Monday, was stopped by security personnel using barricades as protesters advanced towards Parliament. Police fired tear gas and used batons after demonstrators attempted to cross the barricades.

Delhi Police said no prior permission had been obtained for the march towards Parliament. A large number of security personnel were deployed around Parliament House, Jantar Mantar and other sensitive areas to prevent protesters from entering restricted zones.

Some protesters were detained during the confrontation. The CJP organised the demonstration to raise concerns over irregularities in the education system, examination paper leaks, unemployment and government accountability.

The protest took place on the opening day of the Indian Parliament’s monsoon session. Both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha were repeatedly adjourned following disputes and disruptions inside the chambers and were eventually suspended for the day.

The CJP initially claimed that its founder, Abhijit Dipke, had been taken into police custody. The organisation later corrected the information and clarified that Dipke had neither been arrested nor detained.

Security remained heightened around Parliament House and major government areas in central Delhi following the protest.
