No One Can Stop Cross-Strait Exchanges and Cooperation: China

The Chinese mainland has said that no force can stop exchanges and cooperation across the Taiwan Strait or the mutual benefits generated by such engagement.

Zhang Han, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of China’s State Council, made the remarks at a regular press briefing on Wednesday in response to recent comments by Cho Jung-tai, head of Taiwan’s executive body.

Zhang said trade figures for the first half of 2026 clearly demonstrated the strong complementarity between the industrial structures on both sides of the Strait and the broad potential for further cooperation.

According to data from China’s General Administration of Customs, total cross-Strait trade reached $185.03 billion between January and June, representing a year-on-year increase of 25.3 percent.

During the period, the Chinese mainland imported goods worth $133.154 billion from Taiwan, an increase of 22.5 percent compared with the same period last year.

Mainland exports to Taiwan rose 32.9 percent to $51.884 billion.

Zhang said the figures showed that cross-Strait economic ties remained strong and were supported by practical interests despite attempts to create political obstacles.

She said expanding economic and trade cooperation and deepening integrated development across the Strait served the shared interests of businesses and people on both sides.

Such cooperation is the natural result of economic laws and market principles, Zhang said, reiterating that attempts to obstruct cross-Strait exchanges and their mutually beneficial outcomes would not succeed.
