Three Arrested, Including Comedian Narad Khatiwada, for Allegedly Defrauding Chinese Nationals

Police have arrested three people, including comedian Narad Prasad Khatiwada, for allegedly defrauding individuals by promising to secure the release of Chinese nationals held by Nepal’s Department of Immigration.

The arrests were made by the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office.

Those arrested have been identified as Bikram Bahadur Thapa, 38, originally from Katari Municipality–8 of Udayapur and currently living in Nakkhipot, Lalitpur Metropolitan City–14; Gopal Bahadur Gurung, 59, from Sunwal Municipality–7 of Nawalparasi West; and Narad Prasad Khatiwada, 52, originally from Lalbandi Municipality–5 of Sarlahi and currently living in Buddhanagar, Kathmandu Metropolitan City–10.

Gurung is a former senior superintendent of the Armed Police Force, while Khatiwada is known as a comedian.

According to police, the suspects allegedly collected money by claiming that they could secure the release of nine Chinese nationals being held at the Immigration Department’s detention facility in Kalikasthan and retrieve 15 passports under the department’s control.

Police said the investigation was launched following a complaint that the suspects had defrauded the victims of Rs 900,000.

Further investigation is underway under fraud-related charges. Whether the allegations are proven will be determined through the investigation and judicial process.
