A Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicle attacked a passenger bus in Russia’s Belgorod Region, injuring 19 civilians, according to Russian officials.
Rodion Miroshnik, Ambassador-at-Large of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said the drone struck the passenger bus in the city of Shebekino on July 28.
Citing local authorities, Miroshnik said 18 victims were initially taken to the Shebekino Central District Hospital. Preliminary medical assessments showed that 15 had sustained shrapnel wounds, while three were diagnosed with blast-related acoustic trauma. Six of the injured were reported to be in serious condition.
Russia’s state news agency TASS later reported that all 19 injured people had been hospitalised and were receiving necessary medical treatment, citing the Russian Ministry of Health.
The Russian Foreign Ministry official said numerous attacks on passenger buses had previously been recorded in the Belgorod and Bryansk regions, as well as in the Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics.
Miroshnik claimed that the incidents pointed to a deliberate strategy by the Ukrainian political leadership to target civilian passenger transport. Russia condemned the attack as an action against civilians and called for those responsible to be held accountable.
According to TASS, the Russian Investigative Committee has opened a criminal case and is investigating the incident as a terrorist attack.
