Russia Says Ukrainian Drone Strike on Iranian Merchant Vessel in Caspian Sea Violated International Law

Russia has described a Ukrainian drone strike on an Iranian merchant vessel carrying civilian cargo in the Caspian Sea as an act of aggression and a violation of international law.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova made the remarks on July 28 in response to a media question about the reported July 25 attack on the Iranian vessel, which was transporting civilian cargo from Astrakhan.
“The Kyiv regime’s attack on an Iranian merchant vessel carrying civilian cargo from Astrakhan constitutes an act of aggression and a violation of international law,” Zakharova said.
She claimed that the incident demonstrated an intention by the Ukrainian authorities to expand the geographical scope of their attacks.
According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, the latest attack on a civilian vessel in the Caspian Sea poses a direct threat to the regional security of the Caspian littoral states.
Zakharova said the Caspian Sea must remain free from military incidents and continue to serve as a region of peace, good-neighbourliness and cooperation.
The Russian statement did not provide detailed information about damage to the vessel or possible casualties. It also did not include an official response from the Ukrainian side.
