Participants in the fourth nature observation and ecological research route promotion programme at the Qilian Mountains National Park candidate area in Qinghai Province conducted a field study of the black-necked crane’s habitat and its relationship with surrounding species.

During the programme on July 25, participants travelled to the Huahai wetland in Menyuan Hui Autonomous County, Haibei Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. They directly observed bird species living in the wetland and examined the ecological conditions of the high-altitude environment.

The study focused on the black-necked crane’s breeding habitat, food availability, water conditions and coexistence with other plants and animals. Participants also explored how different species interact within the same ecological system.

The activity highlighted that protecting the black-necked crane requires more than safeguarding a single bird species. Its survival depends on healthy wetlands, grasslands, sufficient food resources, clean water and a peaceful breeding environment.

The presence and breeding condition of black-necked cranes are also regarded as important indicators of the overall health of plateau wetland ecosystems.

Through field observation and ecological research, participants gained a deeper understanding of the distinctive characteristics of Qinghai’s high-altitude wetlands and the importance of protecting the entire ecosystem in which the black-necked crane and its “neighbours” live.
