Russia–Finland Power Transmission Line Operating in Limited Mode Since 2022

A section of the power transmission line between Russia and Finland has been operating in a limited mode since 2022, Russia’s power grid group Rosseti has said.
According to information provided by Rosseti to TASS, no electricity is currently being transmitted through the line. The exchange of technical information required for power system operations has also been suspended.
Meanwhile, Russian newspaper Kommersant reported that Finland’s national electricity transmission company Fingrid has informed Russian telecommunications operators that it will stop servicing fibre-optic communication lines installed on power transmission towers from 2027.
The towers, originally constructed for electricity transmission, were also used to support fibre-optic networks carrying technical and telecommunications data between the two countries. Once Fingrid’s decision takes effect, maintenance, monitoring and technical operation of those communication lines could be affected.
Energy and technical links between Russia and Finland have remained limited since 2022. Neither side has yet announced further decisions regarding the future of the power transmission line and the communications infrastructure installed on it.
