A new measles case with no identified source of infection has been confirmed in Palmerston North, New Zealand, raising concerns that additional undetected cases may be circulating in the community.

Health New Zealand said on Thursday that the infected person had no connection to international travel. Authorities believe the individual may have been exposed to measles in either Palmerston North or the capital, Wellington, between July 4 and July 18.

The Palmerston North resident spent time in Wellington during the busy Matariki holiday period, when the city hosted major public gatherings, concerts and an international sporting event. Health authorities said the large number of people present at those events may have increased the possibility of wider exposure.

Public health medicine specialist Sharon Sime said the absence of a clearly identified source had raised concerns that other cases could remain undetected in the community.

She urged people who were in Wellington during the weekend of July 11 and 12 to watch for early symptoms, including fever, cough, a runny nose and red eyes. These symptoms are typically followed by a rash that begins on the face and spreads to other parts of the body.

New Zealand health authorities have warned that measles is highly contagious and can cause serious and long-term health complications.

Two doses of the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine are recommended as the most effective protection against infection.

People who develop possible symptoms have been advised to contact a doctor or health service by telephone before visiting a medical facility, helping reduce the risk of exposing others to the virus.
