Former President Bidya Devi Bhandari has appealed to all sides to exercise the utmost restraint amid the country’s increasingly sensitive situation and to refrain from activities that could disrupt social harmony.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Bhandari urged citizens to stay away from rumours, hateful expressions and actions that could create mistrust or hostility between communities.
“Using a single incident as the basis for harbouring distrust, hatred or a desire for retaliation against an entire community cannot be consistent with our national interest, social values or democratic principles,” she stated.
Bhandari noted that the Constitution of Nepal guarantees every citizen the fundamental right to practise their religion, culture and traditions freely.
She said a lasting solution to such problems could be achieved only through the rule of law, mutual trust and continuous dialogue.
The former president also called on the government, the relevant administrative authorities and security agencies to conduct an impartial, transparent and credible investigation into the incidents.
“I urge the Government of Nepal, the relevant administrative authorities and security agencies to take all necessary measures to investigate the incident fairly, transparently and credibly, bring those responsible to justice under the law, ensure justice for the victims, and restore peace, security and public confidence in the affected areas,” the statement said.
Bhandari further urged citizens to remain patient, responsible and vigilant, warning that unverified information and provocative statements could further complicate the situation.
