Prime Minister Balendra Shah has clarified that he is not opposed to federalism and remains committed to strengthening the federal system.

During a discussion with leaders of Madhes-based political parties on Friday, Prime Minister Shah urged them not to view him as an opponent of federalism, according to Rajendra Mahato, chair of the Rastriya Mukti Party Nepal.

Mahato said he raised concerns with the Prime Minister about the proposal concerning federalism adopted at the convention of the Rastriya Swatantra Party and the apprehensions it had generated.

According to Mahato, Prime Minister Shah clarified that his objective was not to weaken federalism but to make it more effective and stronger.

Quoting the Prime Minister, Mahato said, “Do not even imagine that I am against federalism. The objective is to determine how federalism can be strengthened. There was a proposal to make certain changes to the structure, but it conveyed the wrong message.”

During the meeting, leaders of Madhes-based parties presented their views and concerns regarding federalism, the provincial structure and the latest political situation.
