Partial Collapse of Cuba’s National Power Grid Leaves Western Provinces Without Electricity

A partial collapse of Cuba’s National Electric System left several western provinces without electricity on Saturday.
In a brief statement issued on social media, the state-run Electric Union said the failure occurred at 6:07 p.m. local time between the provinces of Matanzas and Pinar del Río.
The company said the western section of the national electricity network was affected after transmission lines tripped in succession.
According to the Electric Union, the impact of US sanctions has made it increasingly difficult for Cuba to import fuel required for electricity generation and to repair its ageing power plants.
Cuba’s electricity infrastructure has long been affected by outdated generating facilities, limited fuel supplies and inadequate maintenance capacity.
The company said Cuba has experienced several nationwide blackouts since October 2024 as a result of power infrastructure failures and hurricanes.
Technical teams were deployed to restore electricity following Saturday’s disruption, although no immediate timetable was announced for the full resumption of service in the affected areas.
