Tributes have been paid to those who lost their lives in the devastating Beirut Port explosion, with solidarity expressed for the victims’ families, survivors and communities affected by the tragedy on its sixth anniversary.

On August 4, 2020, a massive quantity of ammonium nitrate stored at Beirut Port exploded, causing extensive human and physical destruction across large parts of the Lebanese capital.

According to United Nations figures, 214 people were killed, more than 6,000 were injured, and thousands of residents lost their homes or livelihoods as a result of the blast.

Six years later, the tragedy continues to have a profound impact on victims’ families, survivors, rescue workers and residents of Beirut. The anniversary has served as an occasion to remember all those whose lives were permanently changed and to honour their courage and resilience.

The commemoration has also highlighted that the explosion should be remembered not only as a day of mourning, but as a continuing reminder of the need for truth, accountability and justice.

Families of the victims have continued to demand full disclosure of the causes of the explosion, identification of those responsible and an impartial judicial process.

The United Nations has repeatedly supported calls by victims and their families for justice and accountability while emphasising the importance of a transparent investigation.

Messages issued on the sixth anniversary expressed hope that the memory of the tragedy would continue to remind the international community of the importance of justice.

They also conveyed wishes for Lebanon to overcome its present challenges and build a safer and more stable future through resilience, compassion and hope.
