Beijing has been designated the UNESCO-UIA World Capital of Architecture for 2029 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization and the International Union of Architects.
UNESCO Director-General Khaled El-Enany granted the designation following a recommendation by the Joint Committee for the World Capital of Architecture.
According to UNESCO, Beijing was selected for its exceptional ability to combine one of the world’s richest architectural heritages with a forward-looking vision of sustainable urban development.
UNESCO said Beijing’s historic urban fabric, successful regeneration projects and vibrant architectural culture demonstrate how heritage, innovation and community life can reinforce one another in creating resilient and livable cities.
Under the theme “Back to Balance,” Beijing will use architecture throughout 2029 as a bridge connecting culture, nature and human communities. The city is expected to host exhibitions, conferences, educational programmes and public activities.
The programme aims to promote international dialogue on the role of architecture and the built environment in creating inclusive, sustainable and people-centred urban futures.
El-Enany expressed confidence that Beijing’s distinctive architectural heritage, dynamic urban transformation and future-oriented vision would inspire new international discussions on the power of architecture to improve human life and preserve shared heritage for future generations.
The World Capital of Architecture programme was jointly established by UNESCO and the UIA to highlight the transformative role of architecture, urban planning, culture and heritage in advancing sustainable urban development.
Every three years, the host city of the UIA World Congress of Architects is designated as the UNESCO-UIA World Capital of Architecture. The selected city hosts cultural, educational and professional activities throughout the year.
Rio de Janeiro in Brazil became the first World Capital of Architecture in 2020. It was followed by Copenhagen in Denmark in 2023 and Barcelona in Spain in 2026. Beijing will host the fourth edition of the programme in 2029.
