The Russian internet term “vozdukhan” (воздухан), which became one of the country’s most popular memes in the second quarter of 2026, is unlikely to be included in academic or standard dictionaries in the near future, according to a Russian linguist.

Speaking to the Russian state news agency TASS, Natalia Kozlovskaya, a professor at the Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia, said that “vozdukhan” emerged from social media and informal communication and therefore should not yet be regarded as an established part of the literary language.

According to Kozlovskaya, the term gained popularity amid growing public interest in identifying and categorising social and behavioural types. She noted that its figurative structure is similar to the Russian idiomatic expression associated with “throwing words to the wind.”

In this sense, “vozdukhan” has developed as an informal label for a person who speaks extensively but whose words are perceived as lacking substance, responsibility or practical consequence.

Kozlovskaya also stressed that words and expressions that spread rapidly across social media do not automatically become part of the standard language simply because they achieve temporary popularity.

In linguistic practice, a new word generally requires sustained usage, a relatively stable meaning, broad social acceptance and established use in literary or formal language before it can be considered for inclusion in academic dictionaries.

Earlier, Brand Analytics, a company specialising in social media and digital communication analysis, named “vozdukhan” the most popular meme in Russia during the second quarter of 2026.

Its rapid rise reflects a broader trend in contemporary digital culture, where new words and expressions can emerge and spread quickly as concise and often humorous ways of describing social behaviour, personality types and public communication.

However, temporary digital popularity and long-term linguistic acceptance are not the same. For now, Kozlovskaya’s assessment suggests that “vozdukhan” is likely to remain primarily within the sphere of social media and informal speech rather than enter the established academic lexicon.
