Authorities in Russia’s Moscow Region have issued a 150,000-ruble fine after using artificial intelligence technology for the first time to detect hogweed growing on a privately owned plot of land.

According to the press service of the regional Ministry of Agriculture and Food, the violation was identified through aerial imagery captured by unmanned aircraft and subsequent analysis of the data using artificial intelligence technologies.

Officials said the fine was imposed after authorities determined that required measures to control and remove the hogweed had not been properly implemented on the private property.

The Moscow Region has been taking various measures to curb the spread of hogweed. Regional authorities said this was the first case in which a violation was detected and penalized through the combined use of drone-based monitoring and artificial intelligence.

The use of such technology is expected to make it easier for authorities to monitor large areas, identify affected sites and take timely enforcement action.
