Russian Pressure Intensifies Around Kramatorsk and Slavyansk, Raising Concern in Ukraine

Ukraine is growing increasingly concerned over the situation around Kramatorsk and Slavyansk in the Donetsk region as Russian forces intensify military pressure, according to Germany’s Bild newspaper.
The newspaper said that if Russian forces achieve further gains in the area, Ukraine could face one of its most serious military setbacks in recent years. Bild reported that the frontline is gradually moving closer to key Ukrainian held positions.
Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky said after a meeting on August 7 with Commander in Chief Mikhail Drapaty that Ukrainian forces were facing difficulties near Slavyansk and were working to strengthen defenses in the area.
According to the Russian side, its forces took control of the town of Konstantinovka in the Donetsk region in early July. Russian troops are now advancing toward the Slavyansk Kramatorsk urban area as well as in the Dobropolye direction, Moscow says.
Russian and Ukrainian accounts of battlefield developments frequently differ, and the latest claims regarding advances and territorial control around Kramatorsk and Slavyansk have not been independently verified.
