Foreign Tourists Turn to China for Summer Relief as ‘China Cool’ Emerges as a New Travel Trend

Dragon Media News Desk

As intense heat and heat waves affect many parts of the world, China is emerging as an increasingly attractive destination for foreign travelers seeking cooler weather, natural scenery, cultural experiences and modern technological conveniences.

This summer, a Spanish tourist visiting Yunnan Province in southwest China described the region as “nature’s air conditioner” after experiencing Kunming’s mild climate. Before arriving in China, he had been enduring temperatures of around 40 degrees Celsius, but immediately felt relief after stepping out of the airport into Kunming’s cool breeze.

Yunnan is not the only destination drawing attention. Zhangjiajie in central China’s Hunan Province, known for its mountainous landscape, and the water towns of Jiangnan, the scenic region south of the Yangtze River, have also become popular among travelers looking to escape the summer heat.

Natural surroundings, waterways, local cuisine and traditional products associated with staying cool are adding to the appeal of these destinations.

However, the growing idea of “China Cool” extends well beyond temperature.

For many international visitors, China’s appeal increasingly lies in the combination of tradition, modern life and technological convenience.

Travelers can listen to the bells of ancient temples at dawn, learn traditional crafts from local artisans, travel rapidly between cities by high-speed rail, or order a late-night meal through a smartphone with only a few taps.

Such experiences present a side of China where historical traditions coexist with highly developed urban services and modern lifestyles.

Technology has become another major part of that experience.

Foreign visitors can tour smart factories, use artificial intelligence-powered glasses offering real-time translation, interact with robots and experience autonomous vehicles.

For many travelers, these encounters provide a glimpse into China’s high-tech development and broaden perceptions of the country beyond its traditional tourist landmarks.

China’s efforts to make international travel more convenient have also contributed to the increase in foreign arrivals.

According to China’s National Immigration Administration, the country received 22.91 million inbound foreign visitors during the first half of 2026, representing a year-on-year increase of 20.4 percent.

Visa-free entries accounted for 77.7 percent of the total.

As more foreign visitors experience China firsthand, discussions about the country on overseas social media are also evolving.

Expressions such as “China Travel,” “Becoming Chinese” and “Chinamaxxing” have gained attention online, while “China Cool” is emerging as another way of describing the wider appeal of contemporary travel experiences in the country.

The trend suggests that international interest in China is no longer centered only on famous historical landmarks and conventional tourist destinations. It increasingly encompasses culture, technology, public services, transport convenience and everyday life.

With its combination of cooler summer destinations, cultural diversity, modern infrastructure and advanced technology, China is presenting international travelers with a broader and increasingly multidimensional travel experience.
