Yemen’s Houthi group launched a fresh missile attack on the strategic Red Sea port city of Mocha on Wednesday, according to pro-government media, as attacks on areas controlled by the internationally recognized government have intensified in recent days.

Pro-government Aljoumhouriya TV cited a port official as saying that two missiles struck the maritime pier at Mocha port, causing additional damage to port facilities.

There were no immediate reports of casualties from Wednesday’s latest attack.

Mocha has faced repeated missile and drone attacks since Sunday. In a major attack on Sunday, Yemen’s government forces said seven people, including four security personnel and three civilians, were killed and 30 others were wounded. Port facilities and nearby infrastructure were also damaged.

The Houthis have since claimed further attacks on Mocha and other government-held areas.

The group says its recent strikes have targeted gatherings, weapons storage sites and command positions of Saudi-backed forces. It has accused those forces of preparing military operations against Houthi-controlled areas.

The internationally recognized Yemeni government, however, says the attacks have affected not only military positions but also civilians and port infrastructure.

In recent weeks, the Houthis have stepped up missile and drone attacks on government-held areas in Yemen and targets linked to Saudi Arabia. The escalation has raised concerns that the relative calm prevailing since a United Nations-brokered truce in 2022 could give way to broader military confrontation.

Mocha port is strategically significant because of its location near the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. The latest escalation therefore poses risks not only to Yemen’s internal security but also to international maritime trade and navigation through the region.
