A joint security team has seized a large consignment of liquor and beer allegedly brought illegally through the Lapcha border point in Namkha Rural Municipality–6 of Humla.

The alcoholic beverages, which were reportedly brought in through the Lapcha border area during a trade fair, were found abandoned at Nawalathang in Namkha Rural Municipality–2, according to the Armed Police Force.

Armed Police Deputy Superintendent Nanda Bahadur Saud said the joint security team recovered 594 cartons of liquor. With 12 bottles in each carton, the consignment contained a total of 7,128 bottles.

The security team also seized 194 cartons of beer. Each carton contained 24 bottles, bringing the total number of beer bottles to 4,656.

Based on the carton count and the number of bottles in each carton, a total of 11,784 bottles of liquor and beer were seized.

The estimated value of the confiscated alcoholic beverages is Rs 5,193,600.

Security agencies have launched further investigation to determine who brought the consignment into Nepal, who owned it and for what purpose it had been transported.

As the Lapcha border point lies along the Nepal–China border area, movement during trade fairs also raises questions concerning customs procedures, revenue collection and border monitoring.

The discovery of such a large quantity of alcoholic beverages in an abandoned condition has prompted further investigation into their ownership, import procedure and possible customs and revenue violations.

Note: The original information stated that 11,785 bottles were seized. However, the figures provided for the cartons produce a total of 11,784 bottles: 594 × 12 = 7,128 bottles of liquor and 194 × 24 = 4,656 bottles of beer. The mathematically consistent total has therefore been used in this report.
