Threefold Buddhist Celebration Held in Kathmandu with Senior Sakya Leadership in Attendance

A special ceremony bringing together three significant occasions associated with the Sakya tradition of Tibetan Buddhism has been held at the International Buddhist Academy (IBA) in Kathmandu.

The event marked the Silver Jubilee of the International Buddhist Academy, the completion of the “Complete Path” course conducted by the 42nd Sakya Trizin, His Holiness Ratna Vajra Rinpoche, and the centenary of Khenchen Appey Rinpoche, founder of the Academy.

Senior Buddhist masters, monks, scholars, devotees and invited guests attended the ceremony.

The programme was presided over by His Holiness the 41st Sakya Gongma Trichen Rinpoche. His Holiness the 42nd Sakya Trizin, Ratna Vajra Rinpoche, and His Holiness the 43rd Sakya Trizin, Gyana Vajra Rinpoche, were also present at the gathering.

His Holiness the 43rd Sakya Trizin, Gyana Vajra Rinpoche, addressed the assembly, highlighting the importance of Buddhist education, spiritual practice and the transmission of traditional knowledge to future generations.

Religious masters and monks from different levels of the Sakya tradition participated in the ceremony. The venue was elaborately decorated with traditional Buddhist artistic elements, religious symbols and floral arrangements.

According to an announcement issued by the International Buddhist Academy on August 11, the 41st Sakya Gongma Trichen Rinpoche arrived at the Academy on August 13. He is scheduled to remain there with his entourage until August 20 for religious activities and to preside over programmes connected with the three commemorative occasions.

The Silver Jubilee marks 25 years of the International Buddhist Academy’s institutional journey, while the completion of the “Complete Path” course represents an important milestone in the systematic study and transmission of Sakya Buddhist philosophy and teachings.

The centenary of Khenchen Appey Rinpoche also commemorates his contribution to the establishment of the Academy, the advancement of Buddhist studies and the transmission of Buddhist knowledge to succeeding generations.

Organized by Sakya College and the International Buddhist Academy, the gathering brought together senior religious leadership and a large community of monks and devotees.

The event also highlighted Kathmandu’s continuing importance as a centre for Himalayan Buddhist learning, religious practice and international Buddhist engagement.
