Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to Visit South Korea and Indonesia

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will embark on a four-day visit to the Republic of Korea and Indonesia beginning Wednesday.

According to China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Wang will visit the two countries from August 19 to 22 at the invitation of ROK Foreign Minister Cho Hyun and Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono.

Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, is expected to hold discussions on bilateral relations as well as regional and international issues of common concern during the visit.

While in Indonesia, Wang will chair the first Conference of the China-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Dialogue Mechanism. The two countries agreed in 2025 to establish the mechanism to strengthen high-level strategic coordination.

Wang will also join Chinese Defense Minister Dong Jun in attending the Second Ministerial Meeting of the China-Indonesia Joint Foreign and Defense Ministerial Dialogue.

The China-Indonesia joint foreign and defense ministerial dialogue is the first mechanism of its kind established by China with another country. Its inaugural meeting was held in Beijing in April 2025.

Through the mechanism, the two countries have sought to deepen high-level exchanges, political and security cooperation, Belt and Road collaboration, maritime cooperation, trade and investment, and coordination in multilateral affairs.

During his visit to South Korea, Wang is expected to exchange views with Foreign Minister Cho on bilateral relations, economic and trade cooperation, and developments on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast Asia.

Wang’s visit is expected to further strengthen China’s dialogue with South Korea while advancing more institutionalised political, security and strategic cooperation with Indonesia.
