Worship of Kal Bhairav Believed to Fulfill Wishes and Ward Off Negative Forces

Devotees continue to visit the Kal Bhairav Temple in Kathmandu’s Hanuman Dhoka Durbar Square, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to offer prayers, light oil lamps and seek blessings.

In Nepal’s religious and cultural tradition, Kal Bhairav is worshipped as a fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva. Devotees believe that worshipping Kal Bhairav helps remove fear, reduce the adverse effects of planetary influences, prevent family disputes and bring mental peace.

There is also a widespread belief that devotion to Kal Bhairav offers protection from untimely death and destroys negative forces. For these reasons, devotees regularly perform rituals, light lamps and offer prayers at the shrine.

Both Nepali and foreign visitors come to the temple throughout the year, not only during major religious occasions but also on ordinary days.

The Kal Bhairav image at Kathmandu Durbar Square is regarded not only as an important religious symbol but also as a significant representation of Nepal’s medieval art, culture and heritage.
