Eight Russian Nationals Unaccounted for in Nepal Flood, Two Women Survive at China Border Crossing

Eight Russian nationals are currently unaccounted for following the devastating flood in Nepal, according to the Russian Embassy in Kathmandu.

As of 1 p.m. on August 27, the embassy had received information that eight Russian citizens were believed to have been in the disaster-affected area and had not been in contact.

The embassy said it is verifying the information in coordination with Nepali authorities, who are continuing intensive search and rescue operations.

Meanwhile, two Russian women who survived the flood contacted the embassy on Thursday. They had been caught in the disaster while at the border crossing between Nepal and China.

According to the women, they had already submitted their passports at the border checkpoint and were waiting inside a bus for immigration procedures to be completed when they saw the flood approaching.

They managed to escape by climbing a ladder and moving up the mountainside to higher ground.

The Russian Embassy is now arranging temporary travel documents to enable the two women to return to Russia, as their passports were left behind during the emergency.

The embassy said it remains in close contact with Nepali authorities as efforts continue to determine the whereabouts of the eight missing Russian citizens.
