South Korean Rescue Team Returns to Dhunche Due to Lack of Essential Equipment

A South Korean rescue team that reached the Upper Trishuli project site to assist in rescuing people trapped inside the tunnel has returned to Dhunche after being unable to begin operations because essential equipment was not available.

The team required a mini excavator and a mud pump in particular to carry out the rescue operation. However, those machines were not available at the site, preventing the team from proceeding safely and effectively.

After assessing conditions at the project area, the Korean team returned to Dhunche and is expected to resume operations once the necessary equipment is made available.

The tunnel rescue has become increasingly difficult because of accumulated mud, water, debris and restricted access following the Bhote Koshi flood.

Technicians involved in the operation have repeatedly emphasized the need for excavators, pumps, generators and other specialized equipment to open safe access to the tunnel and remove accumulated mud and water.

The latest development has highlighted that deploying international rescue experts alone is not sufficient unless the required machinery and technical support are also available at the site.
