Bhattarai Expresses Concern Over Geopolitical Moves Creating Distrust With Northern Neighbor

Former Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai has expressed serious concern over geopolitical activities that could create suspicion and strain in Nepal’s relations with neighboring countries during the current Himalayan disaster.

In a social media post, Bhattarai said geopolitical maneuvering, whether deliberate or inadvertent, could generate mistrust particularly in Nepal’s relationship with its northern neighbor China, which is directly connected to the Himalayan region.

“At a time of such a major disaster, it is extremely worrying that some are engaging in geopolitical maneuvering with malicious intent, while others may be doing so inadvertently, creating suspicion and cracks in relations with our neighbors, and more specifically with our northern neighbor directly connected to the Himalayas,” Bhattarai wrote.

He argued that in today’s interdependent industrial economy, Nepal’s long-term national interest requires balanced relations and cooperation with both India and China. He said Nepal should position itself as a dynamic bridge between its two neighbors.

Bhattarai also called for timely adjustments and development of Nepal’s multidimensional domestic policies, with greater priority given to cooperation with countries connected to the Himalayan region and particularly with India and China.
