Russia-Tajikistan Trade Rises 25 Percent as Security and Education Cooperation Deepens

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said relations between Russia and Tajikistan remain at a high level of strategic partnership and alliance.

Speaking at the beginning of a meeting with Tajik President Emomali Rahmon in Bishkek on September 1, Putin said the two countries maintain regular high-level contact and that economic ties continue to expand rapidly.

According to Putin, bilateral trade increased by 25.1 percent in 2025 and grew by another 25 percent in the first half of 2026. He said 320 enterprises with Russian participation are operating in Tajikistan, while more than 96 percent of bilateral transactions are conducted in national currencies.

Russia and Tajikistan are implementing the 2024–2027 Economic Cooperation Programme as well as a joint action plan aimed at increasing bilateral trade 2.5-fold by 2030.

Cooperation in education and humanitarian affairs is also expanding. Five Russian-language schools operating in several Tajik cities currently have around 6,000 students. The Russian-Tajik Slavonic University in Dushanbe continues to operate successfully, while more than 35,000 Tajik students are studying at Russian universities.

Cultural cooperation has also remained active. Days of Tajik Culture were held in Moscow and Kazan in 2025, while Days of Russian Culture took place in Tajikistan in May 2026.

The two countries also maintain close cooperation in the security sphere. Putin said Russia is aware of Tajikistan’s concerns regarding developments in neighboring Afghanistan and that the two sides remain in close contact on security-related issues.
