Xi Jinping Arrives in Cairo for State Visit, Vows to Elevate 70-Year China-Egypt Relationship

Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Cairo on Tuesday for a state visit to Egypt. The visit, taking place as China and Egypt mark the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, is being viewed as an important opportunity to further deepen the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries. The visit, made at the invitation of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, is Xi’s second state visit to Egypt.

Ahead of the visit, Xi published a signed article in Egypt’s Al-Ahram, Al-Akhbar and Al-Gomhuria newspapers, saying China is ready to further deepen its comprehensive strategic partnership with Egypt. In the article titled “Celebrating 70 Years of Solidarity, China and Egypt Embark on a New Journey,” Xi stressed the need to strengthen mutual trust and ensure that the friendship between the two countries is passed on to future generations.

Xi said China and Egypt should continue supporting each other on issues involving their core interests and major concerns while expanding exchanges and cooperation at various levels and across different sectors. He said that as major developing countries and members of the Global South, China and Egypt should work together to uphold genuine multilateralism, international justice and world peace.

Egypt became the first Arab and African country to establish diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China in 1956. Despite major changes in the international and regional environment over the past seven decades, bilateral relations have continued to expand. In recent years, the China-Egypt comprehensive strategic partnership has deepened further under the leadership of Xi and Sisi.

China views Egypt as an important partner in expanding cooperation with the Arab world and Africa. In his article, Xi called for greater cooperation in advancing China-Arab and China-Africa relations and in implementing the four global initiatives on development, security, civilization and global governance by making use of Egypt’s geographical and political importance.

The visit is taking place at a time of continued instability in the Middle East amid the Gaza conflict, tensions involving Iran and other regional security challenges. Egypt remains an important player in regional peace efforts, while China has continued to support the Palestinian people’s right to establish an independent state and has sought to expand its role in promoting political solutions and stability in the Middle East.

Chinese analysts believe the visit, taking place against the backdrop of the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations, could further expand cooperation between China and Egypt in infrastructure, trade, investment and emerging technologies, as well as strengthen coordination within the Global South and cooperation on Middle East peace efforts. Xi is expected to hold extensive discussions with President Sisi on bilateral relations, cooperation in various fields and international and regional issues of common concern.
