Putin Accuses Germany of Economic Policy Failures

Russian President Vladimir Putin has accused the German government of making serious economic policy mistakes, saying businesses are closing, jobs are being lost and living standards are coming under pressure.

Speaking to journalists in Bishkek, Putin also pointed to what he described as a difficult domestic political situation for German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, claiming that public confidence in his government is weak.

“Obvious mistakes are being made in the economy. Businesses are closing. People are losing their jobs, and the standard of living is falling,” Putin said. He argued that Germany’s policies were being justified by the need to “resist aggressive Russia.”

Putin also questioned Germany’s allegations linking Russia to the discovery of an explosive-laden drone at Leipzig/Halle Airport. He accused Berlin of manufacturing evidence against Russia.

The German government has formally blamed actors linked to the Russian state for the drone incident. In response, Berlin announced measures including the closure of the Russian Consulate General in Bonn, the termination of arrangements governing the Russian House in Berlin and tighter entry controls for Russian citizens. Russia has rejected the allegations and described Germany’s actions as a further escalation in bilateral tensions.

Germany’s economy has faced pressure in recent years from high industrial costs, energy prices, uncertainty in global trade and structural challenges. However, some recent indicators have also pointed to limited signs of improvement. Putin’s remarks therefore come against the broader backdrop of increasingly strained political and diplomatic relations between Russia and Germany.
