Mount Sinabung Activity Intensifies in Indonesia, 615 Residents Evacuated

A total of 615 residents have been evacuated from Kuta Tengah village in Indonesia’s North Sumatra Province after volcanic activity at Mount Sinabung intensified.

According to Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency, joint emergency teams moved the residents to shelters as a precaution following a major eruption earlier this week.

Authorities have raised Mount Sinabung’s alert status from Level II to Level III, one level below the highest alert level, after signs of increased volcanic activity.

The volcano earlier sent an ash column about 3,500 meters above its summit, prompting authorities to expand the restricted zone around the mountain.

Residents and tourists have been prohibited from entering relocated villages, areas within a three-kilometer radius of the summit, and a sector extending up to six kilometers southeast of the volcano.

Disaster management teams are continuing to monitor volcanic activity closely as authorities remain alert to the risk of further eruptions, ashfall and other volcanic hazards.
