Commemorative Events Held in Harbin to Mark 81st Anniversary of Victory Over Militarist Japan and End of World War II

Commemorative events were held in Harbin, China, to mark the 81st anniversary of the victory over militarist Japan and the end of World War II.

Russian compatriots living in Harbin, local residents, staff of the Russian Consulate General and representatives of the city authorities laid wreaths and fresh flowers at a monument dedicated to Soviet soldiers who died during the liberation of Northeast China in August 1945.

A memorial and mourning ceremony was also held at the Soviet military memorial located at Huangshan Cemetery in Harbin.

In August 1945, the Soviet Union entered the war against Japan and launched a major military campaign in Manchuria. The offensive accelerated the collapse of Japan’s Kwantung Army and played an important role in the final stage of World War II.

China and Russia have continued to emphasize the historical memory of the struggle against fascism and militarism. Memorial ceremonies are regularly held at Soviet military monuments in Harbin and other parts of Northeast China.

September 3 is commemorated in China as the Victory Day of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. Russia also marks the date in connection with the victory over militarist Japan and the end of World War II.
