EAEU-SACU Cooperation Could Build an Economic Bridge Between Eurasia and Southern Africa

As the global economy becomes increasingly fragmented and regional economic groupings assume a greater role, cooperation between the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and the Southern African Customs Union (SACU) could offer a significant opportunity to strengthen economic ties between Eurasia and Southern Africa.
R. Golubovskiy, Consul General of Russia in Cape Town, outlined the prospects for closer cooperation in an article titled “Bridging Eurasia and Southern Africa: Strategic Prospects for EAEU-SACU Relations.”
According to Golubovskiy, the restructuring of global supply chains, growing trade barriers and the increasing regionalisation of economic activity are creating new conditions in which cooperation between regional integration organisations such as the EAEU and SACU could generate new trade and economic opportunities.
Both organisations operate within customs-based integration frameworks, providing a favourable structural foundation for gradually developing institutional dialogue. Their broadly comparable customs arrangements could help facilitate trade procedures, expand regulatory cooperation and create the basis for more formal engagement in the future.
Golubovskiy also noted that the EAEU and SACU face several similar structural challenges. Both regions need to diversify their economies, improve infrastructure, strengthen competitiveness and adapt to changes in the global trading system.
These shared challenges could create opportunities for cooperation in areas including industrial development, transport and logistics, agriculture, technology, energy and trade facilitation.
The relationship, he argued, should not be viewed solely in terms of increasing bilateral trade. It could also develop into a broader mechanism for establishing long-term economic connectivity between Eurasia and Southern Africa.
As regional integration becomes increasingly important in the evolving global economy, gradual institutional engagement between the EAEU and SACU could help create a new foundation for trade, investment and wider economic partnership between the two regions.
