Fourth Minyak Culture and Folk Customs Week Held in Kangding

The fourth Minyak Culture and Folk Customs Week 2026 is being held in Kangding from September 4 to 9, featuring a wide range of activities showcasing the distinctive traditions, cultural heritage and lifestyle of the Minyak community.

The event is organized by the Communist Party of China Committee of Tagong Town and the Tagong Town People’s Government, with the Dora Karmo Tourism and Culture Company of Kangding responsible for its implementation. The programme is taking place in the Dora Karmo scenic area.

Designed as an immersive cultural experience, the festival brings together Minyak folk traditions and the distinctive cultural atmosphere of the plateau, offering visitors an opportunity to experience local heritage, customs and everyday life firsthand.

Major activities include traditional horse racing and horse-gait competitions, equestrian performances featuring riders in traditional Minyak attire, and exhibitions and performances related to the intangible cultural heritage of the Epic of King Gesar.

The programme also features Minyak folk storytelling gatherings, Tibetan opera performances, folk art presentations by different villages, a Minyak youth music gathering, and traditional song and dance performances.

Activities reflecting local livelihoods and traditional skills are also an important part of the festival. These include milking competitions, wool spinning and weaving contests, opportunities to sample local cuisine, and visits to exhibitions featuring Minyak culture and art.

Organizers said the festival aims to preserve and promote Minyak cultural heritage while allowing visitors to gain a direct understanding of the community’s traditions, arts and way of life. The event also serves as an important platform for promoting cultural tourism in Kangding and highlighting the distinctive cultural identity of the plateau region.
