China Expands Meteorological and Satellite Support for Nepal After Bhotekoshi Disaster

China has stepped up meteorological and satellite support for Nepal following the devastating Bhotekoshi flood and mudslide, providing data and specialized services to assist cross-border disaster monitoring, early warning and emergency response.
According to the China Meteorological Administration, Nepal is receiving a range of meteorological products through MAZU, China’s artificial intelligence-powered early warning system. These include multi-source satellite data and products from the Fengyun-3 and Fengyun-4 meteorological satellite series.

Following the destructive flood, landslide and debris flow that struck the Gyirong-Rasuwa border area on August 26, China’s National Satellite Meteorological Center has continued monitoring rainfall and changing weather conditions across the affected region.
China is also using high-resolution satellite data to track upstream ice-rock avalanche zones and affected river channels. The information is being used to support disaster assessment, search and rescue operations, and meteorological services.
The China Meteorological Administration has connected customized services for Nepal to the Fengyun meteorological satellite system in real time. The services allow real-time monitoring of rainfall, severe convective weather and lightning activity, helping Nepal track potentially dangerous weather conditions across a wider area.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said Chinese meteorological and water resources authorities have maintained close coordination with their Nepali counterparts since the disaster, sharing monitoring information and cooperating in the emergency response.
Guo said China would continue strengthening cooperation with Nepal in meteorology, water resources and disaster management, while providing further support for Nepal’s emergency rescue and response efforts.
The satellite data and real-time meteorological monitoring services are expected to assist ongoing rescue operations while also improving the early identification of further risks from heavy rainfall, landslides and other weather-related hazards in affected areas.
