Goods Stranded in Gyirong After Rasuwa Flood to Enter Nepal via Korala Border

Commercial goods stranded in Gyirong, China, following the devastating Rasuwa flood are being rerouted to Nepal through the Korala border point.

Musa Transport said shipments from more than 400 containers stored in warehouses in Gyirong have begun moving through the alternative route after the Bhadra 10 flood severely damaged government facilities and road infrastructure around the Rasuwagadhi border area.

According to Musa Transport Managing Director Jiang Seping, extensive damage caused by the Bhotekoshi flood to infrastructure at Rasuwagadhi and the road linking the border with Kathmandu means that restoration of the traditional trade route is likely to take time.

As a result, transportation of goods stranded in Gyirong has been accelerated through the Korala border point to maintain supplies to the Nepali market.

Seping said freight movement through the shorter Gyirong–Rasuwagadhi route had been particularly busy ahead of Nepal’s major Dashain and Tihar festivals. The sudden closure of the route has therefore made the use of alternative border crossings necessary.

The company said goods from the stranded containers are now being gradually rerouted through Korala for entry into Nepal as traders seek to minimize disruption to supply chains ahead of the festive season.
