Preparations for Indra Jatra Begin as Majipa Lakhey Aju and Jhyalincha Masks Are Brought Out

Preparations for Indra Jatra have begun with the ceremonial bringing out of the masks of Shree Majipa Lakhey Aju and Shree Jhyalincha from Lakhenani on Monday, on the occasion of Ekadashi.
The ritual is regarded as an important cultural signal that preparations have begun for Indra Jatra, one of Kathmandu Valley’s most significant historical and cultural festivals.
The masks of Majipa Lakhey Aju and Jhyalincha were brought out after traditional religious and cultural rituals were performed. The masks are traditionally used for dances and cultural performances throughout the Indra Jatra festivities.
The ceremony also included traditional musical performances and other cultural activities alongside the prescribed religious rituals.
Majipa Lakhey Aju is one of the major cultural figures associated with Indra Jatra. In Newar cultural belief, the Lakhey is regarded as a powerful figure associated with protecting the community and children. The Majipa Lakhey dance has become an integral part of Kathmandu’s cultural identity.
Jhyalincha is another important character closely associated with the Majipa Lakhey performance. The dramatic interaction between Lakhey and Jhyalincha adds a distinctive dimension to the cultural celebrations during Indra Jatra.
The traditional bringing out of the masks of Majipa Lakhey Aju and Jhyalincha is therefore considered a symbolic beginning of preparations for the festival.
Indra Jatra is among the major historical and cultural festivals celebrated in Kathmandu Valley. The festival features the chariot procession of the Living Goddess Kumari along with Ganesh and Bhairav, as well as Lakhey dances, Pulukisi, Sawa Bhaku and various other religious and cultural performances.
Large numbers of local residents and visitors gather at different locations across Kathmandu to witness the chariot processions, traditional dances and other cultural performances during the festival.
