‘Green Army’ Not Dissolved, Home Ministry Seeks Name Correction

The Ministry of Home Affairs has written to the Office of the Company Registrar seeking correction of the name of “Green Army” after the organisation became controversial for taking part in rescue and relief operations in Rasuwa and Nuwakot following the Bhotekoshi flood while wearing uniforms resembling those of the Nepal Army. Contrary to reports circulating publicly, the organisation’s registration has not been cancelled.

Company Registrar Krishnakumari Shrestha expressed surprise over reports claiming that Green Army had been dissolved. She confirmed that the Home Ministry had sent a letter concerning correction of the organisation’s name.

According to Shrestha, the legal process for dissolving a company or organisation generally requires an application from the organisation itself seeking cancellation. She said Green Army appears to have remained regularly updated in official records and that, at this stage, the immediate action available is to initiate a change of name.

Shrestha said the organisation will be formally notified to change its name in accordance with the relevant provisions of company law and accompanying directives. Once the process formally begins, the name change must be completed within 35 days.

She also said the Home Ministry has the authority to withdraw the approval it had previously granted for the organisation’s registration.

The organisation had come under public scrutiny over the use of the name “Green Army,” military-style uniforms and its organisational appearance. Questions intensified after its members were seen participating in rescue activities in Rasuwa and Nuwakot following the Bhotekoshi flood, raising concerns over whether a civilian organisation should be allowed to use the term “Army” and attire resembling that of state security forces.

Meanwhile, Green Army founder Sabin Sharma has described reports of the organisation’s dissolution as misleading.

In a statement, Sharma said the organisation was aware of what he described as misleading information circulated at different times regarding its establishment and operation.

According to Sharma, Green Army has continued programmes related to environmental protection, disaster management, rescue and relief assistance in accordance with established procedures and prevailing laws.

The Home Ministry’s latest move therefore appears to be aimed not at immediately terminating the organisation but at addressing the legal and institutional controversy surrounding the name “Green Army.” The organisation will now be required to complete the name-change process within the prescribed period.
