PM Shah Leaving for US Today to Attend UN General Assembly, Highlight Climate Change Impacts

Prime Minister Balendra Shah is scheduled to leave for the United States on Tuesday to attend the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. Leading a 14-member Nepali delegation, Shah will travel to New York, where he is scheduled to address the General Assembly on Asoj 8.

Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal and his delegation departed for New York on Sunday ahead of the Prime Minister’s visit. Nepal’s national priorities, the impacts of climate change and international cooperation are expected to feature prominently during the visit.

Prime Minister Shah is preparing to draw international attention to the devastating floods that struck Rasuwa on Bhadau 10, causing extensive loss of life and property. His address is expected to highlight growing climate-related risks in the Himalayan region, the consequences of natural disasters and the challenges facing mountainous countries such as Nepal.

The Rasuwa floods have underscored the need for stronger early warning systems, disaster preparedness, emergency rescue capabilities and international cooperation in recovery and reconstruction. Shah is expected to present Nepal’s humanitarian and infrastructure losses while emphasising the needs and concerns of countries particularly vulnerable to climate change.
