Russian and Cuban Foreign Ministers Discuss Strategic Cooperation on UN General Assembly Sidelines

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez held talks in New York on September 23 on the sidelines of the High-Level Week of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. The two ministers discussed bilateral cooperation, regional developments and ways to strengthen coordination in international forums.

According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, the meeting took place in an open atmosphere of mutual trust, with both sides exchanging views on current issues of bilateral cooperation. The ministers agreed to further coordinate their positions and diplomatic efforts in international forums, with particular emphasis on the United Nations.

During the meeting, Lavrov reaffirmed Russia’s support for Cuba’s demand for the immediate and complete removal of US trade, economic and financial restrictions, as well as more recently imposed restrictions affecting the energy sector. He also emphasized the need to remove Cuba from the United States’ list of state sponsors of terrorism.

Lavrov opposed the extraterritorial application of unilateral US restrictions against Cuba, including measures affecting other countries and their citizens and companies. The Russian Foreign Ministry described these restrictions as obstacles to Cuba’s economic activities and international cooperation.

Both ministers reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining dialogue and cooperation to strengthen the strategic partnership between Russia and Cuba. They also expressed their intention to advance cooperation in promoting global and regional security and a multipolar world order based on respect for national sovereignty and every country’s right to independently choose its own development path.
