Xi Jinping Pays Tribute to Fallen National Heroes on China’s Martyrs’ Day

Chinese President and Communist Party of China General Secretary Xi Jinping paid tribute to fallen national heroes at a ceremony in Beijing’s Tian’anmen Square on Wednesday. Other Party and state leaders joined representatives from various sectors of society at the Martyrs’ Day ceremony.

China observes Martyrs’ Day on September 30 each year to honour those who gave their lives for national independence and the country’s development. The National People’s Congress established the commemoration in 2014. It falls one day before China’s National Day on October 1.

This year marks the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 105th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China. It also marks 90 years since the victory of the Long March, which took place from 1934 to 1936.
