German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has announced around €1 billion in additional military aid for Ukraine. During his visit to Kyiv, he said the package would include long-range weapons, strike drones and satellite equipment.

According to Merz, funding will also be provided for the joint production of interceptor drones designed to stop jet-powered unmanned aircraft. He said considerable technical progress had been made on this work in recent weeks. Germany would provide Ukraine with long-range weapons, strike drones and satellite equipment to enable it to act against Russian launch sites, he said.

Merz also announced an additional €350 million for Ukraine’s energy sector ahead of the coming winter. He said the funding would be used for generators, transformer substations and necessary repairs. The coming winter would be very difficult, he said.

Merz and German Economy Minister Katherina Reiche arrived in Kyiv on Sunday on an unannounced visit. Russia has repeatedly said that supplying Ukraine with weapons prolongs the conflict.
