Doctors Advise Medical Checkup if Mouth Ulcer Does Not Heal Within Two Weeks

Dragon Media News Desk

Doctors have reported that a woman over 50 from China’s Henan Province was diagnosed with tongue cancer after repeatedly developing ulcers on her tongue. Her ill-fitting dentures were repeatedly rubbing against the inside of her tongue. Liu Peiming, head of the oncology department at Henan Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine, said the ulcer would begin to heal but was injured again.

Ill-fitting dentures or a sharp tooth can cause sores in the mouth. However, friction alone is not enough to conclude that a sore is cancerous. Common mouth ulcers usually heal within one to two weeks. If a sore in the same place does not heal within two weeks, becomes hard, develops irregular edges or keeps recurring, it is advisable to consult a dentist or an oral specialist.

Bleeding, persistent pain, difficulty moving the tongue or swallowing, or a lump on one side of the neck are signs that require further examination. Doctors advise people with these symptoms to seek medical attention instead of waiting for the sore to heal on its own.

Tobacco use, alcohol consumption and chewing areca nut or betel quid are established risk factors for oral cancer. Using both tobacco and alcohol increases the risk further. Some types of HPV are also associated with cancers of the mouth and throat.

If dentures do not fit properly, a tooth edge causes a sore, or a sore keeps recurring, a dental checkup and any necessary adjustment are recommended. Regularly checking dentures, maintaining oral hygiene and avoiding tobacco and areca nut products can help reduce risk. A sore that does not heal should not be ignored for a prolonged period; early attention is important for detecting disease in time.
