Mexico to Continue Coordinated “Mirror” Patrols with US to Prevent Border Incidents

Dragon Media News Desk

Mexico will continue coordinated “mirror” patrols with the United States along their shared border in Tamaulipas state to prevent further incidents, President Claudia Sheinbaum said Tuesday. The announcement followed reports of a shooting involving US Coast Guard personnel in the area.

Sheinbaum said Mexico was in communication with the US Northern Command and Coast Guard. She stressed that bilateral security cooperation must uphold sovereignty, territorial integrity, mutual trust and coordination without subordination.

At her daily press conference at the National Palace, Sheinbaum said the two countries had previously agreed to the mirror patrols. One had already taken place, and another was underway to prevent misunderstandings, she said. Mexico seeks to maintain good relations with the United States, particularly on security, in accordance with its constitution and laws, she added.

US Ambassador to Mexico Ronald Johnson said Sunday that US Coast Guard personnel had come under fire near the Tamaulipas border. Mexico’s government said it could not verify that shots had been fired from the Mexican side. It nevertheless deployed 500 military and National Guard personnel to the area for coordinated patrols with the United States.
