The Syrian Information Ministry has denied reports that Syria is participating in the Yemen war, saying Syrian forces are not fighting alongside the Saudi-led coalition. The ministry said Damascus firmly supports Saudi Arabia, but its policy does not call for opening new fronts.
Earlier, the U.S. news outlet Axios reported that Damascus and Riyadh were discussing sending between 10,000 and 20,000 Syrian troops to Yemen to take part in military operations against the Houthi movement. According to Axios, the proposed contingent would consist of Syrian Sunni troops who would fight the Shiite group Ansar Allah, which controls northern Yemen. The report said such a move could give the war a sectarian dimension and further escalate the conflict.
On October 6, Syrian Interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa met Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud in Riyadh. Their talks focused on plans for strategic cooperation. Al-Sharaa invited the crown prince to visit Damascus to strengthen diplomatic relations and begin a new phase of joint Arab action.
