Zakharova: Confrontation with Russia Will Worsen the EU’s Problems

Dragon Media News Desk
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said the European Union had embarked on a path of confrontation with Russia, which would make its problems more complex rather than resolve them. As problems grow because of its own mistakes and miscalculations in confronting Russia, she said, the EU is accusing Moscow of pursuing plans that do not exist.
Zakharova also accused German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and the Ukrainian leadership of being involved in corruption schemes. Commenting on Merz’s visit to Ukraine and the military aid package worth about €1 billion announced there, she said the cost would fall on German taxpayers. This account does not include a response from Merz or the German government to the allegations.
Zakharova said Russia would continue working through international forums to identify those responsible for the Nord Stream explosions and hold them accountable. She said Moscow viewed the possible deployment of additional NATO forces and military infrastructure in the Baltic region as an escalatory move. She reiterated that Russia had no plans for armed conflict with Western Europe and was not threatening anyone.
She described allegations of Russian interference in Italian elections as disrespectful to the Italian people. Zakharova accused Western countries of interfering in other nations’ elections and claimed that Russia did not interfere in foreign electoral processes.
On the Middle East, she said urgent efforts were needed to restore uninterrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Russia was ready to help find a compromise based on international law and the legitimate interests of all parties involved, she said.
