China’s Fuzhou will host World Cities Day 2026 on October 31, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) announced on Wednesday.
This year’s theme is “Regenerating the City: Adequate Housing for All.” The event will be held at the Fuzhou Strait International Conference and Exhibition Center in the capital of Fujian Province.
According to UN-Habitat, the observance will examine how urban regeneration can contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 11 on sustainable cities and communities, and support implementation of the New Urban Agenda. Discussions will focus on revitalising urban areas, improving access to adequate housing, and building more inclusive, resilient and sustainable cities.
The three-day programme, running from October 31 to November 2, will bring together senior UN officials and representatives of national and local governments, international organisations, academic institutions, the private sector and community groups. Participants will share successful practices and discuss practical responses to common urban challenges.
The programme will also present the fourth-cycle Global Award for Sustainable Development in Cities, known as the Shanghai Award. The award recognises cities for outstanding achievements in sustainable urban development. Other events will include a high-level opening ceremony, thematic forums, side events, exhibitions and guided city tours.
Established by the UN General Assembly in 2013, World Cities Day was first observed in 2014. It promotes global cooperation in support of sustainable urbanisation.
