Paolo Zampolli, the US Special Envoy for Global Partnerships, said sports could reopen doors in US–Russia relations that had been closed because of politics.
In an interview with TASS on Thursday, Zampolli, who works with both the White House and the US State Department, said President Donald Trump understood that sports could reopen doors kept closed by politics.
“Hockey is a natural place to begin because the United States and Russia share extraordinary talent, history and respect for the game,” he said. Sports cooperation, however, should not be limited to hockey, he added.
