Lebanese President Joseph Aoun urged the United States to press Israel to halt attacks on villages and towns in southern Lebanon during a phone call with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Thursday.

Aoun discussed the situation in Lebanon and the region amid recent developments, according to a statement from the Lebanese presidency.

He called on Israel to respect the terms of the framework agreement signed with Lebanon and to stop targeting farmers in the south. He stressed that they must be able to reach their agricultural land safely.

Aoun also said the Lebanese army and security forces were fully carrying out their responsibilities, including enforcing decisions to prevent armed displays, seize weapons and ammunition, and combat smuggling.

The call took place amid continued tensions along the Lebanese-Israeli border, despite the framework agreement signed in June. Israel says its operations are aimed at eliminating threats from Hezbollah.
